Parade Magazine

Yesterday I was able to sit back and read the LA Times from cover to cover. In the Sunday edition, they include a little national fluff magazine called "Parade". This magazine has always been really light on content. It seems to be geared to a 3rd grade reading level, like USA Today.

This Sunday the feature article in Parade was "The Best & The Worst Of Everything". It was a roundup of news from 2005. I busted a gut laughing when I read one entry titled "Best Team Effort". It was about a team of 47 surfers who rode a giant surfboard in Australia. The article said "... A crowd of 5,000 people gathered near Canberra to watch the riders conquer the 40-foot-long, 10-foot wide board..."

Man I cracked up. Canberra?!? Canberra is the capital of Australia, and is NO WHERE NEAR THE OCEAN. It is an inland city in the mountains between Sydney and Melbourne. That is like saying "Surfers had fun at the Denver, Colorado beach".

Obviously, the editorial integrity of Parade magazine in regards to checking basic facts is non-existent. And they wonder why people don't read newspapers any more.
